View Full Version : drugs over music?

Howdy fellow listeners.. I was just wondering about most people's views on the use of drugs in order to enhance musical experiences.
I myself know my views, and know that certain (if not all) music varieties can be intensified with the use of certain well known drugs.. mainly E's.
I love the music and the atmosphere of "dance" clubs and raves over the more common pop 'n' shit clubs with the alcopops and all that malarky.. I don't know much about the scene over in US but cant see it being much different from over here in the UK.
views?..

the only way to get me to listen to dance music is if im on drugs and completely off my head on them

Funnily enough, during my drug taking stage of life I don't think i'd eve rlistened to music, so I can't really comment. However, some of the great music we have today was written under the influence.
P.S. I'm not condoning drugs.

I've always enjoyed listening to music after eating some shrooms. Pretty awesome to just lay down and turn some Black Sabbath on.

yeah drugs make music better. although for some reason if im messed up i tend to hate the standards. ive always hated the grateful dead but when im fucked up i hate them 10x more. same with most techno.

Yea I know what ya mean, i feel like you got a beat.. not just following the music but your body starts to also and so when the songs get shit you notice more as when the music gets better

They go hand in hand for me.
Although i like to listen to differant kind of music if im on anything more than the norm (pot).
Usually the normal metal/rock stuff is too much for me (esp on shrooms). I started listening to some totally differant stuff recently.

tbh i've tried every drug at least once excepting coke/crack (but only because i can't get any) and i enjoy music as greatly without drugs as i do with. i think it has to do with the way i think, i tend to only listen to music when i'm alone and nothing is distracting me so i can relax, let my mind wander, or alternately, "process" the music. (like, each time i listen to a song, i listen to the drums, or guitar, etc, and you know, think about it)
but, i PLAY music better when on LSD. the same reason i can lenjoy music drug free - thinking hard and mulling things over - means when it comes to improvising, i fail miserably because i'm overconcentrating. when i play with the band, i tend to take some sort of chill-mood drug (or even drink a few), when i'm by myself or with friends and not in public i do it tripping. i usually tend to imagine the music visually, as..a sculpture? like, a constant stream, i see, and as i pick the strings it changes as such. it's incredibly hard to explain so i won't try past that, but it helps, i guess.

I don't follow the same beliefs as Bill Maher, but I do think he's hillarious. Like, I know I don't agree with the things but I do use my sense of humour to laugh at them.
Now, with that aside, in a standup, which I think was called "Be More Cynical", he was talking about drugs and he said "... well, it hasn't hurt my record collection."

Interesting topic.
I am always amazed at certain people I had known, that if they attended a concert & you had asked them how it was there answers never really had anything to do with the music.
It was always a reply such as: Dude we had the best weed or we where so f'ed up it was amazing or I had the best trip...yada yada yada.
Never a reply such as what a great set or the sound sucked or was amazing. Only answers pertaining to the drugs they consumed and the effect it had on them.
I have had my day(s) in my youth doing certain things, but I will never forget seeing a certain band play that I was totally into, and having 2 couples in the row in front of me on E. Not to be a downer, but I found great joy in ruining there time by grabbing one guy by the shirt and almost lifting him off the ground telling him if he didn't shut the F' up I was gonna f with him and his friends the entire show! Loved being a downer on the E group this night :)
They left thank god...but not before ruining a few tunes I wanted to listen to and see played.
I guess it depends on what side of the fence your on...do they enhance things? perhaps...but they also annoy the hell out of those around you depending on what it is they are on & what music or concert it is your attending.
May be different at a dance club, but when ya pay $30+ for a ticket to see a band play, I can't see the point of being f'ed up to a point of being incoherent to my surroundings.

hahaha, well E being my weapon of choice (tried almost every other drug bar acid) and I can honestly say the fun to be found in sending someone under is well.. priceless :)
I've never gone under on anything myself, and i think that if your retarded enough to get to the stage where you can then you deserve it.. too much of anything is a bad thing as they say.
I dunno how this "group of E'ers" could be making much noise and annoying you, if anything I would of thought they'd just be bouncing around with the odd smile/wink or hello to you sir :)

LOL...nope...was the non stop hugging kissing one another and trying to talk over the music that got to me.
Part I left out too is that I boot the shows I see on DAT, and even with a mic stand up, they where loud enough to annoy me on tape after the show. Needless to say that recording was thrown away.
Reminds me of seeing the Dead play at the Meadowlands yrs ago....think it was 86 or 87...girl screams on purpose into a guys mic.'s saying I love you Jerry, only to have this guy punch her out over two rows of chairs. At Dead shows there was a specific section for those who record the shows and she was warned prior to keep her mouth shut...was funny to see 10 - 20 other tapers in the pit quietly clap there hands after he knocked her over the row of seats.
Not that I promote violence in any means...but it was funny...stupid hairy hippie chick with too much petchule oil on to cover up her B.O. since she had probably not bathed in 2 - 3 months. hehehe
E back in the 80's was not like the E of today...was putrid tasting powder wrapped in paper that you swallowed...not even sure that the mix of MDM and the MDA was correct. I avoided it.

sounds like base.. wouldn't touch the stuff, but i'm quite sure the MDMA mixture used now is somewhat correct, unavoid at any cost* :)
*do no take drugs! <3
certain drugs enhance audio perception but its not a big of a factor as genetics it seems, or perhaps it takes more time and experience for the person to listen to other musics while on a substance that the dont normally listen to. i have known plenty of people to use drugs with music yet they do not get that much more of an intelligent ear

I don't need any sort of drug to enjoy music however, it sure as hell does let me get into it alot more. Lots of times at parties (pit parties mostly) when we are all fucked up we pile into my car and I crank the music and every has a wicked time.. nothing beats bass shaking seats all messed up... just gotta make sure you hide the keys good or you wake up 5 hours later down some wierd fucking road with everyone passed out and no idea where you are.

After smoking like 3 trees, I listen to Phish for the first time.
I really liked it.
The next week, my friend that I smoked with burned me a CD with the songs we listened to.
I really hated it.

I like Phish sober and intoxicated. Same with the Dead. I guess I'm not hardcore enough to like metal or angry enough to like punk or gay enough to like emo. But then again, I don't stink enough to be a hippie. I just like good music - and there is no denying that the Dead and Phish are comprised of great musicians.

the loudness, speed, and distortion of music does not determine how hardcore it is. the complexity and perfection of a song is much more hardcore. the distortion on anything must be of perfect tone and clearity. the perfect sounds arranged in the perfect mathmatical patterns and melodies makes for hardcore. the more complex yet harmonous, the more hardcore. pantera for example, is kinda weak.

What are you talking about here? Real hardcore music is basically kind of like very fast punk with some metal influence usually with a singer that yells or screams with lots of group yelling. And lyrics are key to hardcore music, real hardcore music usually has "positive" or straight-edge lyrics to it. Mathematical patterns and the tone and clarity of distortion have nothing to do with determining how hardcore music is at all. I think you are getting hardcore music mixed with some kind of metal, because pantera is far from hardcore.

I love dropping acid and listening to music. My two favorite albums to dose two are De La Soul's "De La Soul Is Dead" and Bongwater's "The Power of Pussy". Pretty psychedelic albums with lots of wierd samples throughout.

dark side of the moon played straight through well you're stoned has to be done atleast once.
Dark side of the moon is the only album I can have on repeat and never care that its constantly repeating. At the beach this year it must of repeated itself 10 times was wierd because we never noticed we were still listening to it the whole trip.
