Any classical music/orchestral music fans here? I just heard a very moving piece, and it reminded me that I love (some) classical music. Perhaps its because I've played some. But theres something selfless, and powerful, about a 500 piece orchestra, all playing in harmony.
Its a stark contrast to the music of today, which ultimately is selfish and ego driven, relatively at least. In a large band, every player had to play their part. Today, bands are smaller and so while musicians have a better opportunity to shine, they use it to show off.

Eh, Maybe I'm just nuts.

No you’re not crazy, I love classical works and orchestrated music; the way it steadily progresses and brings forth an excellent blend of instruments (unless one-person).

It’s unfortunate people are caught up in today’s gaudy mainstream and “underground” music, without knowing what real music is: done with an array of ranging instruments that tell a story without the need for words.

So anyway, are you just curious who’s into this music? or are you in need of some song suggestions as well?
Also Jerome, you may wanna look up your definition of 'classical' lol :fear:

Have many a classical recordings in my collection.

From J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, Beethoven, Ravel, Chopin, Stravinsky, Mozart, Handel...to even more contemporary works such as Copeland.

There is a time and place for all forms of music depending on the mood.

J.S. Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto's" are great to check out if have not heard them. With Handel comes the infamous "Four Seasons".

As a contemporary piece, Gershwin, who actually was more of a jazz writer has Rhapsody in Blue as both orchestral and original jazz versions available.

Also on a contemporary note...the Violinist "Nigel Kennedy" is awesome to check out for anyone on any level of interest in classical music.

He has the standards and classics he plays, but he is really interesting when he plays the music of Hendrix. That disc is called:The Kennedy Experience

Well worth listening to!

With Handel comes the infamous "Four Seasons".You're thinking of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons", which are all fantastic btw! (I never get tired of Winter)

Anyway, here are some more classical works that are worth a listen if you haven’t already, some are obvious:
Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture
Beethoven's 9th Symphony in D minor Op. 125
Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nacht Musik
Delibes’ Lakme
Handel’s Hallelujah
Pachelbel’s Canon in D
Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings

Some other classical/instrumental songs worth mentioning:
David Lanz - Cristofori's Dream
Henry Mancini - A Time for Us
Penguin Cafe Orchestra - Perpetuum Mobile
Wim Mertens - Close Cover
David Nevue - While The Trees Sleep
Konishi Kayo & Kondoo Yukio - Lilium
Andrea Bocelli - Con Te Partiro

...Strayed a little bit, o well :D

You are correct...my mistake...was intending to say Water Music.

Just listened to last night from a past Download, the complete Vivaldi 4 seasons....4 disc set...interesting and well worth it if you like the Four Seasons! Downloaded it off of Rhapsody and saved it to wav burned to disc...so I forget at the moment what label it's on and what orchetsra/conductor plays on this. Nice box set though...well worth it to here the Allegro's, Addagio's and Largo written for strings, with alternate versions with winds. and such...some solo passages as well I had never heard prior.

Penguin Cafe Orchestra<-- wow...I never thought anyone heard of them before...especially on the TW forums ;)

Would you consider them as Classical? I would have to say they are crossover, depending on which Penguin Cafe Orchestra recording we are discussing.

The song "Milk" for example...almost a Laurie Anderson/Phillip Glass level with this crossover type example.

Crossover to WHAT, exactly? Philip Glass is a legitimate modern classical composer.

Crossover to WHAT, exactly? Philip Glass is a legitimate modern classical composer.

This is true, yet Glass has other works out that are more experimental or World Music (Passages w/ Ravi Shankar), in the sense of an electronic mix of world beat and not classical another example is "Aguas da Amazonia", of which I would classify this as electronic/mood music, such as some of Robert Fripp's work & Brian Eno's Ambient 1: Music for Airports. These are not classified as Classical.

Nigel Kennedy has performed with world class orchestra's and yet does an entire disc on Violin covering Jimi Hendrix. I would not classify this as classical either, yet like Glass, is a Classical performer/comopser.

I am not saying Glass is not nor should not be placed in a classical category. Just that he is not always producing 100% classical recordings.

Gershwin gets classified as classical, yet his works where written as Jazz?

Frank Zappa had written, recorded & composed an entire score for the London Philharmonic, yet would I now classify him as only a classical composer? Would Sheik yer Booty or Apostophe' or Overnight Sensation now be classified as only Classical? He received recognition as a classical composer, yet he crossed over creating jazz with releases such as Hot Rats and Waka Jawaka.

I like Glass....saw him in `87 perform with Laurie Anderson when I was living in Cleveland...was an awesome show.

So I am not saying he is not a legitimate classical compser, but a crossover composer, due to the talent he has to achieve more than one style of music in composition and performance!

Oh, I see what you meant. I thought that you were applying the broad brushstroke of "crossover artist" as something of a pejorative to Glass's classical work (which is substantial), whereas you just meant that he has had crossover projects. OK.
