Cool thing about UFC 65 was that it was held in Sacramento----my hometown. But tickets were literally hundreds of dollars, so fuck it. I just PPV'd it.

It was not that amazing of a card, but the two main fights were Tim Silvia vs Jeff Monson battling for the heavyweight championship and Matt Hughes vs George StPierre battling for the middleweight belt.

6'8" Tim Silvia won a totally boring fight against 5'9" Jeff Monson. Not really worth discussing---I just wish there was some decent competition in this division. It's a shame that someone as historically nonathletic and out-of-shape as Tim Silvia can hold the belt this long.

The fight of the night was St Pierre KTFO'ing Matt Hughes in the 2nd round. Actually, he pretty much got knocked out twice in this fight, but he got saved by the bell in the 1st round.

I'll try and recap both knockouts of Matt Hughes:

The first one was a superman punch which totally stunned Hughes, followed by a left hook to the jaw that buckled Matt's knee and sent him to the canvas like a sack of potatoes. But time ran out as GSP mounted him and started smashing. But trust---Hughes would not have recovered on his own.

Then, in the second round, George again knocked Matt down. This time, with a wicked left roundhouse to the head, then TKO'd him by ref stoppage when he mounted him and started dropping elbows to the face.

Flying Superman Punch to the forehead stunning Hughes at the end of the 1st

Left shin to the jaw in the 2nd knocking Hughes down:

Wow! I was pretty sure Matt had it in the bag.

Oh Canada

Way to go St Pierre, good to see someone beat Matt Hughes, who is the most dominating performer I have ever seen. GSP gets Serra next, and then probably a rematch with Hughes, so some good fights coming up (i like Serra, but don't think he has much chance)

Matt Hughes is a bitch, good riddance he finally lost it to someone deserving. Maybe Hughes will ball up and move up a weightclass, finally.

Hughes is still a savage. But I'm happy to see a change in the belt.

Hughes dismantling by St. Pierre was phenomenal, I haven't watched a match that exciting in awhile. St. Pierre will hold the WW belt for a long time to come, the only threat to him I see in the division is Penn.

Another interesting fight was the Brandon "The Truth" Vera vs Frank Mir (former hw champ). Vera dominated the former champ from the clinch with an impressive display of knees and then proceeded to ground and pound him till the ref stopped it, making Vera 8-0. I can't wait till he fights Sylvia and takes the title from this boring paper champ.

you can watch the fight here :turned:

No offense to either Vera or Mir, but like Vera said in his pre-fight interview, this match was just a stepping stone.

Mir has looked like dogshit in both of his fights since his devastating motorcycle accident. He really doesn't look like he has really "made it back" to the UFC yet.
