  • Tell me, is this worth a lot?

My friend had a bottle of Johnnie Walker Red Label Whiskey (Scotch) given to him by his gran.

    The only markings are:

    R837
    C JW 26
    U G B

    66/377

Any idea how much it could be worth?

Probably like 25 bucks if it's a fifth (750 mL).

Red label is pretty cheap, like $20-25.

Being half Irish (father's side), I'm a big fan of Jameson 18 years. Very nice and not too expensive.

It's more the fact that it is pretty old, given to him by his Gran, it has been sitting in her house for ages.

A Johnnie Walker Red Label from 1959 is on ebay for $120.

but for whiskey its different from wine

the age on whiskey is the length of time its been kept in the oak casks, this is what gives it its flavour and colour.

Wine some fermentation still takes place in the bottle? so that means the longer it is kept in the bottle will add to the flavour.

hmm not sure about that anymore

i'd have thought that the length of time whiskey spends in the bottle shouldn't makea difference cuase there is no active processes going on that will change the flavour but maybe there is some active things happening? i dunlt know anymore

That bottle isn't really worth much more then you would pay for it at your local liquor store right now, chances are its probaly dead if it hasn't been stored correctly, or at the right temperature. I wouldn't suggest drinking it, or selling it, it is probaly worth more as a family heirloom than anything else, until one of you has a kid who wants to get drunk and drinks it, which will be the end of that.
