  • Lag but no lag? help me out..

i have a problem with the so called "lag" for the server and i want to know what i can do about it.
I live in the netherlands (don't know if it could be distance or anything) fast cable connection, shared internet connection (which causes no trouble), 50ms ping average to trench wars where i always play on, 0.2% packetloss, high ping 120ms and i keep being put in spectator every 2 minutes...
About the second time put in spectator i have to reconnect because the server just doesnt respond to me anymore, or it takes like 5+ minutes before i sit in my ship.
When the temp trench wars server was on everything was gone, no lagging out, not even when downloading and having 800ms ping average...
This is no playing for me like this and i really want to play again,
Please help me out because i'm lost.....

    Thanks,

I have a similar problem with getting put into spectator mode all the time, which only started happening a few days ago.

I do have a fair bit of real lag because of my location and net connection (ping around 400), yet for a couple of weeks after i first started playing, i could get along fine like that. About 3 days ago, i can start playing like normal, but after 2 or 3 minutes i am always put into spectator mode, the reason given being high latency. When i now go out of spectator mode, 100% of the hits i make on other ships fail to destroy them, as opposed to around 10% that is normal for me. It also puts me back into spectator mode again after a couple of minutes of this.

It's totally unplayable now, whereas before a few days ago i was a little laggy but able to get along fine. Internet conditions haven't changed at all for me.. the problems are happening when i have no other programs at all open that use bandwidth. Similar problems are also happening for other subspace zones, but since i like trench wars best i am asking here. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

did you trace the routes to see if it could be a router screwing up?

Nope. I don't think it's a router problem because of how consistent the problem is in its timing. It always works fine for two or three minutes before it puts me into spectator mode. If it was a router problem i'd expect it to be much more intermittent and i wouldn't expect to be able to come back out of spectator mode immediately. Also, ping times and packetloss are pretty constant for all of that time, for both before and after it puts me to spectator. I haven't been able to detect any major spikes just before being put into spectator.

ok well this sounds kinda weird but...

i found that if i play ss in windowed mode and then do something else that uses my bandwidth (surfing the internet, downloading etc) then it kinda screws up the game. Even after i stop doing whatever else that im doing it throws me in spec due to latency. If i do a ?lag it gives me acceptable values (200 ms .1 .1) but yet i cant enter the game. In addition, everybody elses ping appears really low like everyones from finland or something. The problem is not solved even if i exit the game then reenter. I found that this is due to windowed mode. If i switch to fullscreen mode then i can play like normal. I dont know if this helps but i guess to make a long story short... If youre not already using fullscreen mode, switch to it. Hope this helps someone out there...

heh, this prob i had for like 4 or 5 months, it seemed to be less when the other computers were downloading and taking up like 90% of the bandwidth, but not much,,, its very strange... i still dont know where my lag went, but im happy and dont hope it returns lol

i forgot to add, volrak, i get the same thing as you..no one dies when hit and i am able to play for about 2 or 3 minutes fine before i get put in spec, then it just doesnt go away.

This is a typical trace from where i am. There's a fair bit of latency, but the thing that confuses me is that under the same conditions, a week or so ago, i could play fine without getting spec'd. One possibility i thought of is that the lag limits were tightened or something? Would anyone who reads these posts be able to verify something like that?

To answer a previous post, i've always played full screen, not windowed.

its a router problem...call up your ISP and tell them which router is broken and ask if there is anything that they can do about it.

the network at my house is changed, no more internet sharing, its now computer --> router --> cablemodem
i still have the same lag though, 120ms high ping in game 50ms low ping and 60ms average
the packetloss however is changed, no longer 0.2% for both, but 17.4% from server to me, and 0.7% from me to server..... is there anything i can do about this???
