  • Your know your plan to build more jails sucks when Texas says it's dumb

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/stor...xas-crime.html

Conservatives in the United States' toughest crime-fighting jurisdiction — Texas — say the Harper government's crime strategy won't work.

"You will spend billions and billions and billions on locking people up," says Judge John Creuzot of the Dallas County Court. "And there will come a point in time where the public says, 'Enough!' And you'll wind up letting them out."

Adds Representative Jerry Madden, a conservative Republican who heads the Texas House Committee on Corrections, "It's a very expensive thing to build new prisons and, if you build 'em, I guarantee you they will come. They'll be filled, OK? Because people will send them there.

The Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice Central Unit seal is painted on the cell block wall in Sugar Land, Texas. The 102-year-old jail is slated for development as Texas reducing its prison population. Pat Sullivan/Associated Press
"But, if you don't build 'em, they will come up with very creative things to do that keep the community safe and yet still do the incarceration necessary."

These comments are in line with a coalition of experts in Washington, D.C., who attacked the Harper government's omnibus crime package, Bill C-10, in a statement Monday.

"Republican governors and state legislators in such states of Texas, South Carolina, and Ohio are repealing mandatory minimum sentences, increasing opportunities for effective community supervision, and funding drug treatment because they know it will improve public safety and reduce taxpayer costs," said Tracy Velázquez, executive director of the Washington-based Justice Policy Institute.

"If passed, C-10 will take Canadian justice policies 180 degrees in the wrong direction, and Canadian citizens will bear the costs."

Do you know if these prisons will be privatized? Privatization is a major concern in the corrections industry because it creates profit and therefor corruption.
This is evident in the U.S where more and more laws are being introduced to send more and more people to prison, where they will be forced to work below minimum wage for the benefit of private industry. These privatized prisons also have no interest in rehabilitation, and want to see their "slave labor" incarcerated as long as possible.

I'm not that informed but from the little I have read it seems the Harper government is as bent as a 9 bob note.
From selling out Canadian farmers in the NAFTA, to creating what could be the greatest environmental disaster in the history of your country (tar sands industry).

Private companies in the United States operate 264 correctional facilities, housing almost 99,000 adult offenders.[13] Companies operating such facilities include the Corrections Corporation of America, the GEO Group, Inc, and Community Education Centers. The GEO Group was formerly known as Wackenhut Securities.
Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) has a capacity of more than 80,000 beds in 65 correctional facilities. The GEO Group operates 61 facilities with a capacity of 49,000 offender beds,[14]
Most privately run facilities are located in the southern and western portions of the United States and include both state and federal offenders.[13]

There are specific states within the U.S which have limited or banned the privatization of correctional services, mostly for the reasons stated in my earlier post.

(yo a non-troll reply to a post you made, holy god)

recently here in louisiana they passed a law banning secondhand cash purchases. the intent is to cut down on illegal metal thefts primarily - if you show up at a scrap yard and sell them a bunch of copper you "found", there has to be an electronic record of the transaction. in reality though the real crimes will just develop a new black market (some form of laundering) while people like me will be arrested for using cash at a garage sale.

but they dont even have to pass laws to put us in jail - it's a noted (and sad) fact that every single American, at any given time, is committing one (and on average three) felonies. source

NAFTA - a "free trade" document detailing who can sell what to who for what price. yeah, "free trade". as in "you are free to trade what we tell you to"

as far as i'm aware, though, tar sands/oil shale/etc extraction is relatively safe environmentally. i havent done the research in awhile, but i feel like i recall that an entire oil shale/tar sands operation can be relatively un-invasive - but a quick wiki search shows there quite a few methods and so i'm going to assume some are clean and expensive but the preferred are cheap'n'dirty.

You need to google 'tailing ponds'. Basically they use massive amounts of fresh water to pump out the oil, then they separate the oil from the water and leave the water in large artificial lakes because it's still much too toxic to put anywhere else. Except the lakes leak out and destroy everything around them. These lakes in Alberta are HUGE, and you can actually see them from space on Google Maps.

I don't know Epinephrine I looked them up and the Canadian Government seems to think they are safe and don't cause any adverse reactions. It's because of ignorant people like you who don't know much about tailing ponds that people are starting to not want tailing ponds in their areas now. I am sure you could link me to a bunch of craaazy conspiracy websites saying they are dangerous but I mean the government themselves say its fine and we should just believe what they say. I am sure plenty of scientists have done studies on it I mean.

I'm so confused. Are you actually agreeing with alleged government and scientific reports? What happened to the fluoride and immunization arguments?

The oil sand extraction procedure is one of the worst methods, environmentally and energetically. There's just so much oil, we can't not get it out.

As far as the prisons, this is exactly why I didn't vote for Harper. He is a christian extremist who will push this country as far to the right as the population lets him. And it's sad because it looks like we are letting him go too far. It has been said and demonstrated many times that pumping more money into building jail cells is not going to fix any problems in the long term.

kthx seems to think that just because I think vaccines are a good idea and that you're putting your children at risk by purposefully not giving them any vaccines and that the vast majority of objections to them are wacky, completely unfounded and unproved fantasies that for some reason I believe everything 'the government' (specifically the FDA) says. I don't know how he made that decision though because last I heard, it's not the government that decides whether or not vaccines are safe, but medical researchers around the world.

As for the actual topic of this post, Harper is the worst kind of extreme conservative. He's an extreme religious conservative that has enough self-control to hide his views through a veneer of "intelligent technocrat" and now he's showing his true colours by doing stuff even Texans think are too conservative.
