  • this game just raped my cpu

i stopped in for a quick round of base earlier and noticed that my cpu had shot up to 56 degrees by the end of the game. that's into the maximum temperature range for my processor. a client from 2001 should not be doing this to a dual-core chip from 2009 that has aged fairly well. hell, a game this old should barely produce any kind of load at all on a dual-core cpu, yet resource monitor confirms that continuum and one of the many svchosts were hogging the cpu badly.

is there some kind of setting somewhere that i should tweak or something? i don't remember this ever happening before. disabling firewall/antivirus did nothing. i'm on windows 7 ultimate 64-bit and this never happened on xp, if that makes a difference.

pls help, even tf2 does not try to eat my cpu like this.

Svchosts pegging a CPU is not too uncommon and can be one of many things. Are you sure that the svchosts isn’t doing this without SS running? In other words, I would do a fresh boot and monitor without ever firing up SS. If it doesn’t peg the CPU, start your browser and hit a few web pages. If it only occurs when SS is started it could be a bad/broken driver but you still don’t know which one (i.e. could be a NIC driver, video driver, or even DirectX drover).
Task Manager sucks and will not give you the process information that you need to really to troubleshoot what actually called the offending Svchosts processes. You can just started repairiong/re-installing drivers at random or you can try to determine exactly what is calling this specific Svchosts. To do this, download and install Microsoft’s Sysinternals Process Explorer.

It is fairly easy to figure out and use and it is free. Once you determine actually what is calling the offending Svchost process, you can quickly re-install/fix the issue. Note; malware also will cause this to happen, i assume that you have already run scans for root kits. Even if it is, Sysinternals Process Explorer will show you the name of the DLL that is calling it.

Edit; I run SS on a tablet that has 64 bit Win7, SS runs just fine on it.

SS on a tablet? That is so boss. I assume you don't actually play, as it would be impossible, right?

I do play when I want to sit outside (it has a bluetooth keyboard). What would be slick is if SS supported the accelerometer that is built into it..would be very hot to steer ship by just tilting the tablet! if this could be supported it might breath new life into the game since it could then be played this way on other mobile devices.

Yeah, my computer heats up an insane amount while the client is running. I also realize over the course of the game that my S2C increases with how hot my computer gets and at some point I can't even enter arenas and I'm forced to spec. Can I really get lag from just having my computer start heating up?

A lot of the current processors in laptops have 'speed stepping' which will lower the clock speed of the CPU when thermals get too high. If it does this, your PC would slow down but it is doubtful that it would manifest itself as S2C lag. To test to see if the thermals are somehow affecting the S2C issue, get the PC hot and where it is lagging. Quickly reboot it and see if the S2C issue persists. If the S2C is normal, then it is not thermals. Another test would be to buy a ‘can of air’, get it hot and laggy, and then cool it off quickly by blowing air into it.

Is your PC a laptop? Does it continue to overheat to the point of crashing? It would be normal for it to heat up when playing SS, it drives a fair amount of video processing. By a sure way to shorten the life of your PC (or any electronics) is high thermals. Keep the dust and hair balls out of your PCs, make sure the air is moving properly through and around your PC. Fans are one of the last moving parts in PCs, they don't last forever, replace them every few years. Avoid over-clocking, users rarely know more than the engineers who designed these parts and they sure as hell have no testing or discovery on how much the higher thermals will shorten the life of the parts.

after verifying that only continuum was triggering this offending svchost, and checking its associated services, i killed a couple of useless ones (tcp/ip netbios helper and security center) and that seemed to help that half of the problem, but continuum was still eating cpu. i played around with every option i could find. lowering sound quality helped a bit, and the rest of the problem pretty much evaporated when i changed the color depth from 8 to 32. not sure how that was the miracle cure, but there you go. it's now using a more appropriate 8-10%.

ITT noopies learn color depth can hog resources

Does this mean youre going to play now? Youre racking up skillbox penalties

? he just said he increased color depth and got it to stop hogging

maybe the low quality gfx intermingled with the flux capacitor of the plutonium taken from the libyans which caused a domino effect to eventually force ph's obese cpu on the treadmill stressing it to an extreme.

clearly, the high level of stress is indicative of the cpu being of the bruce vilanch variety.

Did you try cleaning the fan vents? Cause my 7 laptop used to get all loud and all while playing NFS MW and SS, but now stays nice and quiet.
