  • Lag Screen problem

Hey TW, I've been trying to figure out this lag issue i have had since the end of TWL. So whenever I log on to continuum there some sort of lag spike whenever I'm in game. The continuum window is all jumpy when Im in game and spectating.Everything else runs smoothly. I've tried to fix it with Malware scanner to see if its a malware problem, nothing came up so I don't have malware. I've used another program called CCleaner too see if I had any other issue there but it ddn't fix my issue. Ive closed programs in the background, reset my router, etc.. nothing fixes the issue.

Not sure what the issue is, I've only had this laptop for five months. Here is my current lag in game:
    PING Current:20 ms Average:30 ms Low:10 ms High:80 ms S2C: 0.0% C2S: 0.3%

I run Windows 8, wireless. As you see my lag is fine, and my fps is around 130-180 at times. Before this it was at 200-230s. Help would be appreciated, take the trolling somewhere else thanks in advance.

have you looked at your advanced setting and tried clicking the No Framerate limit, or avoid page flipping buttons at the bottom, occasionally it can help. If its while in spec its unlikely to be a lag issue, this game was designed with 56k modems etc and ran smoothly, so graphics is your most likely culprit.

background programs can also cause screen lag. If your near CPU limit or have a lot of things hogging memory, close some down and see if it helps.

What do you suggest me to do with my graphics? I've had those settings on already.

As Demonic already said, from your explanation I'd think it's a FPS problem. Try pressing ESC+F and a red number should pop up at your screen (FPS: Frames Per Second), obviously, the more the better. For a good and smooth gameplay feeling, you should have a minimum of 30-40. If it's less than that, you know that your computer's resources can't support to run the game smoothly. That can be caused by background programs as Shaddow said, for example, when I'm at a not-so-fast windows 7 machine, and my antivirus notifier pops up, my FPS drops down drastically until I close that popup.
It can also make a FPS difference if you run it window mode or full mode. Full mode usually runs better (from my personal experience).

Since you said you're using Windows 8... Could it possibly be that it has gone worse not after TWL, but rather after you changed to Windows 8 (either upgrading your current system, or getting a new Windows 8 machine)? Or have you been able to play smoothly with Windows 8? I would think that's likely a Windows 8 issue. I have got a Windows 8 tablet/notebook hybrid, and I seem to experience a lot of Graphic CPU usage, and in return a pretty low FPS ingame (unplayable). Then again, my tablet isn't designed for that and doesn't have any horsepower either to support gaming. I haven't found a solution for that, as I only use it to chat it doesn't matter to me.

I'm not a PC specialist and what I now say might be entire bullshit, but to me it looks like my Windows 8 Tablet is using the regular CPU for Continuum and doesn't use the Graphic chip at all, hence it'll run slow.

I hope that helps anyway, would be nice to hear back about what your FPS is and if it's rather Windows 8 causing the problem.

          EDIT:
Ah I didn't see that you stated your FPS above already. Well, that's random then? Have you noticed specific times where the FPS jumps, does it jump at all? Or is it constantly 100+?

I've noticed that sometimes it would go to the 200s-230 but snce this problem it would stay around the 130-180 range. Before this problem occured my FPS would be always in the 200-230 range running the game smoothly, now its hard to dodge and aim a ship at all with this occurring spike. It makes me want to play the game less and less.

When I first got this laptop five months ago my lag was okay, but I could run ss smoothly on it with Windows 8 already on it.

Is the screen lag always present or is the FPS sometimes ok? Like Shadow said; it could be that your PC is being taxed by some other process, I would suspect that it might be something like Microsoft Search Indexing service running in the background. I would try closing/disabling as many background processes, including the indexing service, and see if it makes an impact. You should be able to get the total amount of processes down to around 40 (for all users).

Start Task Manager, go to ‘Processes’ tab. Make sure that the check box at bottom ‘Show processes for all users’ is selected. Right click on ‘SearchIndexer.exe’ and select ‘End Process’. You can do this with SS windowed or minimized, after ending the search process quickly check to see screen lag has gone away. (SearchIndexer.exe processor will respawn itself after a few minutes so the screen lag will come back, you just want to determine if this is the issue. If it is the issue you will need to re-configure how/what it is indexing or disable the service while playing.

If it is not the issue you will need to watch the processes to see which one is consuming the CPU cycles, you can sort them by CPU use by clicking on the heading. If you see one that is consuming CPU try ‘Ending Process’ and see if your screen lag has gone away. (Note; if you ‘End Process’ on a required process like Explorer.exe you may make your PC to stop responding. Since ‘End Process’ only affects your current Windows session and is not persistent, simply reboot the PC if you ‘break’ anything.

Hey, that worked, for now. It seems to be running alot more smoother after I closed that program. I wont really know until I play game of base today.

For all non-mobile computers, Use a dual boot system of windows XP SP3 & a 2013 up-to-date Ubuntu Linux. Learn about which useless windows services you can disable.
