  • Consequences of Increasing Minimum Wage

Due to liberals' incessant demands to raise minimum wage, numerous franchises and companies have implemented automation to accomodate the inevitable increase in minimum wage.

For example, Wendy's is planning to install self-service ordering kiosks @ 6,000+ locations. Mcdonald's and other franchises are expected to follow @slower pace.

This will lead to more automation and an increase in unemployment rates, specifically in the entry level sector, e.g. fast food restaurants, grocery shops, conv. stores, etc.

Moral of the story: dumbass Sanders supporters will cripple the economy and only hurting themselves when job prospects decrease dramatically. This will inevitable lead to more welfare, government-assisted recipients and cause an increase in taxation.

Is it worth it if Lrim makes $5 more an hr, but Pee Pee Sock loses his job and livelihood???

They're expediting the process by making these demands. Subsequently, these major corporations are justified to incorporate automation and cut staff as an excuse to keep their business running. Entry level positions are important for people who are new to the workforce/need to expand their credentials.

Since when do capitalists and libertarians argue against innovation and progress?

As someone who has been into radical anarcho-capitalism for nearly a decade, it took awhile to really come to understand the fundamental contradictions inherent within capitalism. This notion you have, that minimum wage is bad because it will speed up technological innovation is just the tip of an iceberg that one day you might perceive in full.

Like even as economics become less and less relevant, you are here now somehow clinging onto "economic growth" as some thing that is apparently more important than anything else, including technological innovation. Why? Because deep down you know that we live in a society where people are losing their jobs NOT because they are "lazy" but because traditional economics is reaching its end, as it applies to a world driven by humans and not automation and algorithms.

It might remove some of the entry-level work involved in various parts of the industry, and in a way it can also be argued that the use of technology in such a way is not a direct representation of technological progress--those devices might be examples of that progress, however. The human element cannot be completely removed from those jobs, especially when it comes to goods and food.

Human beings are biological beings, something humans seem to forget for some reason, and there is a certain primal association with things we buy, especially in places like grocery stores and food markets (restaurants included). Machines cannot really replace that element for innumerable reasons, but the basics of it is that people will reject the technology on a visceral level because it goes against the primal nature of our species. It is not progress to separate people from interacting with other people on those levels and I think our biology knows that. So, no, the use of automated devices might be a booming market at first, but it will be short-lived because of the lack of the human element. People simply won't allow it to be, kind of like rejecting an implant or some kind of technological augmentation to the human being, and so on.

So even if minimum wage would coax service industries into using a more automated process for the services they provide, the businesses would lose money, in the end. Do not blame the need for a higher federal minimum wage as being the reason for businesses to push the boundaries of capitalism--blame the businesses for being so cheap. It's a simple, age-old problem, how to balance capital with human resources, guys on top make much money while those at the bottom suffer. We can get into a debate about the sense of entitlement business owners have towards how much they are worth, but I think it's obvious...they get paid too much while those who keep the business afloat don't get paid enough. Seems like that's pointing out the obvious at this point, right?

What raising the minimum wage would do would keep people in menial positions longer, and if you want to talk straight numbers here, the fact that there would be less employee turnover is what would hurt the economy in the long-run. There wouldn't be any reason for people to leave the jobs that provide them enough to support themselves in a comfortable lower-middle-class lifestyle, and so, what about those of us who work for small wages at high-turnover places because it's a low wage and because we are not expected to be there long? There is a market for low-wage, high-turnover employment, and it would be a problem that would require a thought-out solution from whoever-the-fuck-makes-the-rules. Those jobs need to be maintained somehow,

But then we get into the whole thing about inflation and costs of living and all of that and we all know that there are numerous problems in way some parts of the government are run, especially in terms of its relationship with the economy, so if you also want to talk about actual solutions to the problems, more than one area needs to be addressed before solutions can be found, but there can be little harm in raising, and capping, the minimum wage, or at least, tying it into the inflation rate and having it fluctuate according to fluctuations in inflation. Or whatever they could think of.

/it's why I don't involve myself with government affairs

/problems are easily fixed, yet aren't, so what's the point?
