    Post Steam Relaunch - General Info

    You may have heard the rumors. We'll be relaunching on Steam. Each Steam game has 3 total launches; we used one in July of 2015, and now we'll be using #2. What this does is essentially gives your game a boost of exposure on Steam, funneling in more players.

    Unfortunately, last time around we weren't very well-prepared. It was done in a bit of a rush. I returned for a short time, about a week before the launch, to try and help out, and saw it was a bit of a mess, to put it mildly.

    There's no big rush this time around, though we're aiming for within a couple of months. We can do it even sooner, if there's more community support.

    This time we have a much better idea of some of the issues new players face when installing from Steam, and some of the things that can make the game unattractive to modern audiences (I'm looking at you, engine sounds). Rather than a default installer, we have the HUGE advantage of controlling exactly which files are distributed, as well as the ability to set our own options. According to our statistics, on average, people from Steam play this game about 1.5 minutes total, with many giving up in frustration or possibly disgust. Let's make a 2017 Continuum install that will make people want to play. (NOTE: For you diehards, a "Classic Install" DLC will be available that will overwrite any changes.)

    I'll be posting threads to this forum with various extremely specific, task-focused items we need to focus on in order to relaunch on Steam. (No new threads will be allowed here, to keep us on-task.)

    That's cool news qan. I had no idea you could relaunch 3 times. I'd be happy to greet and help new players like I did last time. My two big suggestions are....

    1) New players should be sent into a training arena away from pub and be forced to complete some type obstacle course before being allowed into the main part of game. I'd even go further and suggest they graduate into Newb arenas when they do complete a training course. Let these be overseen by a constant staff member assigned there who is actively helping them. Reps/Mines/Rockets/Attach/Portals/Bursts and of course bullets and bombs need to be drilled into newbs heads.

    2) NO MASS GIANT PUB THIS TIME. It was ridiculous last time when there was like 90 people in pub all trying to learn and it was a clusterfu** of spawn and attach and die hell. I think arena of 20-25 is what we should be looking for. The arenas that start new as limits are met should again be overseen by an active staff member who can explain why they are in a sparce arena and continue training if they need. Also they could teach them how to jump into bigger populated arenas as they open up.

    All in all.. LESS CHAOS this time. We need smaller populated environments that are conducive to learning and seeing the subtleties when it comes to game play. It's sort of exciting to me we can relaunch this and try to get things better this time around. We may want to also have hosted events going or elims, wbduels , javduels going too. Making them learn arena / ?go commands is key.

    Is this going to be a coordinated effort across all zones?
    Alpha zone needs to return so players can learn the basics in a safe environment.
    The learning curve is larger than people realise. Even just entering and basic flying is too difficult for most to manage before they give up. I've tried introducing a couple of teens to the game to see how they coped with just the tutorial in trench wars, they were hopeless even though they are avid gamers.

    DSB has a pretty good overall tutorial in ?go tutorial. I just mentioned if they would be into allowing it to be used as a default login. I talked to Eridu and he said he would message you qan. Anyone curious, log in to DSB and type ?go tutorial. It's pretty good and if we can use that, it could save a lot of aggravation instead of making a new one. I do think it could be changed just a bit.. wondered if maybe a bot could be in there that would be attachable and maybe another that could be for ships to blow up. This tutorial they have though is what I'm thinking would be a good default arena for newbs to be thrown into before being allowed into the game. Trench Wars when I first started had a tutorial sort of similar that had ships you could blow up. Anyone know where that went? Have not seen it in ages.     Happy to help in whatever way possible.

    One suggestion would be to link them a tutorial video as they are installing the game so they can watch the basics of Continuum.

    Is there any way u can force new players onto a squad chat + get them to join a squad. Like people downloading from steam could have a newbie chat already set and staff help players in here:



    Is it possible for brand new players to be directed to another area where a teaser video is shown: It would be like 30 seconds long and would show: Before we begin... Trenchwars has many arenas/ events/ come join a squad and VS other squads for glory. On the video it would show a quick video of a jd/dd/bd in a space of a few seconds. Finally it would say, at first you won't be very good but the longer you play the better you will be!

    Hello everybody,
    I think all these ideas are good, It's important for new players to feel welcome at first, and to also learn the most basic of commands such as ?go arena.
    I also think the idea that was proposed by Leeland is a good one too, with all newbies being funneled into a new squad off the git.
    It does a couple things, creates a bond with another players leading to countless bouts of inspiration between the two later but also gives them a chance to have a "training buddy", if not a squad then atleast a chat channel.

    I think it would help a lot for this game if the Billings ops reset all names who havent logged on for 5 years. Whats the chance they will relog anyway? Because new players will have to try 200x before they find a name thats not taken. This could already make people give up before they have entered the arena. It's not like the game gives u options if you enter a name, like a runescape did. If you use "Trenchwars" as name and its taken, the game would give u options which are similair to it, like Trenchwars1, Trench wars, etc.

    And yea I agree on an arena where those people will be put in, because they will be surrounded with people with same skill level most likely. Unlike when they enter pub now. If you have no clue what you are doing, and you get shot within one second after spawning... Then you will give up easily too.

    @Major Crisis in regards to the username reset suggestion:

    If my memory serves me correctly billing operators with the ability to reset names can only reset one name at a time which means resetting all those inactive usernames is not really a feasible option given the workload. I feel it is worth mentioning that during the first launch there were several players who offered their unused names to be reset to increase the amount of available usernames and I highly doubt it made the slightest of differences in player retention rates. It seems as if most players tend to have their preferred unique usernames these days most of which should still be available.

    However I do agree that the zone selection screen can rather clunky to deal with, and thus creating new names is not the most pleasant of experiences when a name is taken. There might have been a decent amount of players who never even bothered to try the game out due to being frustrated with the name creation process.

    .. now as far as the public arena goes, most of us probably can agree that it is not new player friendly in the slightest. Our current public arena has strayed away from its main objective and has its obvious flaws, and is unfortunately filled with several outright cancerous individuals some of whom probably should have been purged years ago to ensure a better gaming experience within the community. And as far as the main objective goes, in case you are not aware, our public should be focusing on the basing aspect of the arena by promoting it to both new and veteran players alike. It is supposed to be the main focus and deserves more attention, but now the public arena is trying to be a jack-of-all-trades attempting to please every kind of player. One could argue that the entire public arena should be scrapped and rebuilt by perhaps shifting the focus to competitive dueling to promote a faster and more action-packed gameplay, but I digress.

    If we want to have a successful second launch then we need to make sure that the first impression of a new player is good enough. There will still be players who can not stand the gameplay or graphics, but there will also be players who are either into old school games with pixelated graphics, or players who want to become a part of our long-lasting gaming community. We need to attract the right target audience to get some sort of player growth.

    One big thing that should be encouraged is the return of public squads with their own chats and squad tags. It would make a huge difference in the long run.

    Yeah, I know everyone is all super positive and shit these days, but these are all going to be spent on a useless endeavor until the fucktards from all the zones and the sscouncil get together and combine into one fucking zone. Because nobody wants to play a multiplayer game divided up into 10 zones of 25-100 players. Would be much better to be one zone, until then its a waste of time.

    Turban has a point about the jack of all trades pub arena. I suggest we disable tw-pubsystem and pub bux for 1 month during the relaunch with promise of bringing it back.. Use the original old pub basing map and set limits at 25 players for each pub arena. ?go duel, elim, wbduel, javduel and base cover everything specialized we need. Have hosted games going fairly often too depending how many players are logging in

    I don't see how this could be done.........what would be the default pub arena? I mean in theory you are right but.........honestly to me.. and I'll admit I'm biased.. Trench Wars has done the lions share of everything good related to Continuum for the last 5 years. Hockey Zone as I understand it had a tizzy fit over us hosting hockey games and now look what has happened to their zone. zippo.... Trench Wars should be prioritized first..

    Your right, it should be. The four biggest zones population wise should come together. Offer each other zone their main league that will be ran by TW in 3 month periods. So we have TWL/DSB/EG/ETC leagues that get ran in three month cycles. Pub changes to the league that is running during the time it is running. TW pub during TWL, EG pub during EG League etc. Have TW Pub ran 2 nights a week for three hours, and the same with the others while it isn't the main pub. This is the only fucking way to make this game last another two years and any sysop or council or some other dipshit who won't do this because of their ego is a traitor to the game.

    Tell the rest of the zones to fucking fall in line, and then make TW the only available zone when someone downloads the game from steam without redownloading the map list which lets face it no newbie would do most likely. If they don't like it tell them to eat a fucking dick, if the council threatens us honestly who the fuck cares at this point they are in control of what 500 players? Time to just go off the reservation here and make our current population viable whether the other dipshits like it or not.

    What's this talk about removing pubbux? The last time that happened, players lost millions with 0 warning! FUCK YOU, STAFF.

    In all seriousness I'd suggest creating a single zone, don't call it Trench Wars, just call it Subspace or Continuum or Subspace Continuum. In this zone would be a group of TW maps, EG maps, hockey maps, DSB maps and so on and so forth.

    The main map upon entry would be a very basic one that was decided upon by all those who have any say in running any current zone and needs to be treated delicately until agreement was reached. They could even be called the Council of Subspace or some shit.

    Also anyone who has lost pubbux due to staff incompetence should be reimbursed at least 1:1. We lost players over that shit, even though some eventually came back (hi alanon).

    Oh yeah, pubbux millionaires should get their money back as well as getting a formal apology or some interest on lost earnings.

    Or you staff fuckers can continue trolling the playerbase and I can go over to the other zones and tell them you fuckers are going to cancel all their zones and get them all to kick up a fuss. Your choice, assholes.
