That's assuming that you know the word you're trying to read in the first place. This entire forum is the poster child for why spelling, in fact, is important. Lots of people either:

        A) Use words that are completely inappropriate for the context.

        or

        B) Misspell words to the point that they're actually the correct spelling for a completely different word with a completely different meaning.

EDIT: Plus, you don't sound like a blathering idiot when you spell things correctly. It's analogous to not spreading peanut butter all over your face before heading out the door in the morning.

comunication with friends and such over the internet is the one place where i would say that good spelling and grammar is not needed. letting spelling and grammar mistakes run wild kind of adds a conversational tone to things.. and adds to inividual voice (some might say that that voice is "im an idiot".. but theyre being gay). when people who use spelling and grammar criticize those who dont i get the feeling that they're a bit of a prick. that's just my instinct though, my final judgement on a person won't depend on whether or not they care about spelling and grammar on the net. this is not a formal essay.

Call me "a bit of a prick," but proper spelling habits are going to shit because people don't use it on the Internet. I don't want to have to translate what people are trying to communicate, plain and simple. I can understand in situations like chats, where time is somewhat of the essence, but for forum posts? Would it take that much effort for people to just to give a quick glance over what they've written?

I agree with Zeus that it's a little bit different of a case for people who aren't native English-speakers... I can understand that. But for people who are, you have no excuse. The Internet is already a bastion of people who use "u" in place of "you" and "ur" in place of "you're" and "your." (There's a huge problem right there--"your" has a completely different meaning from "you're") That's unfortunate.

For the reader's sake, just take a little bit of pride in what you're writing. If it's that important for you to get your point across, make sure it's actually legible. That's all I'm saying.

Spelling and grammar are part of the presentation of what one is trying to say. When communicating through writing, especially online, you remove other kinds of communication you have when talking face to face or even on the phone. Body language and inflections of voice are taken away, while spelling and grammar take on more prominence.

Like Conc said, it's also a matter of pride, but also respect. Anyone who thinks proper use of language is only reserved for essays or for work or for things that "really matter" is saying that what he says to you doesn't matter at all.

I think anyone who cannot read when someone makes a typo is the dumbass, that cant make out a word based on the letters given. More then someone who has sucky hand-eye coordination.

In the game, I don't think spelling and grammer are THAT important. But it still bothers me when people use "u" and "ur" and all that garbage.

The forums are a different matter, though. I can't stand it when people can't at least be bothered to use capital letters, punctuation, etc, in their posts.
